The March 29 puzzle opened with cog + ito + ergo + sum — a clever nod to Descartes' famous Latin phrase.

Today's Quartiles puzzle opened with one of the best hidden references we've seen in a while: cogito ergo sum.

Right at the top of the board, the first four tiles read:cog + ito + ergo + sum

Put together, that is the famous Latin phrase by René Descartes: "Cogito, ergo sum" — "I think, therefore I am."

The timing may also be intentional: a potential nod to Descartes' upcoming birthday on March 31.

Why this easter egg is so good

  • It appears instantly in the first row, so players notice it fast. Though being in Latin means it could be easy to overlook.
  • It is a complete, recognizable phrase rather than a partial hint, which makes it satisfying to discover.
  • It rewards both wordplay and general knowledge in a way Quartiles does at its best.

Another great touch: the quartile word existentialalso showed up, which fits the Descartes reference perfectly and gives the whole board an extra philosophical vibe.

The rest of the board still offered plenty of challenge, but this opener gave the whole puzzle a clever personality from move one.

If you spotted this one too, you were not imagining it — this felt like a deliberate nod from the puzzle editors.
